Two major earthquakes shook southern Türkiye and the northwest of Syria. The scale of the disaster is enormous: over 42,000 buildings in Türkiye and over 9,300 buildings in Syria have been damaged or destroyed. More than 100,000 people were injured and over 50,000 people lost their lives.
In the region of Idlib (Syria), at least 3 million people are affected by the consequences of the earthquake. The Hatay region (Türkiye) also recorded enormous damages and a high number of people left without shelter.
The families displaced by the earthquake are in need of food, hygiene items, tents, mattresses and blankets. The lack of clean water increases the risk of spreading diseases such as covid-19 and cholera. Women are at increased risk of experiencing violence in crisis situations like this.
Hilfswerk International provides emergency aid in Iskenderun & Arsuz (Hatay/Türkiye) as well as in Harim (Idlib/Syria). With our activities, we contribute to meeting the basic needs of the people affected by the earthquake. In addition, we provide uncomplicated and rapid assistance in the form of case management for women who are (at risk of being) exposed to violence in this humanitarian crisis.
Idlib (Syria):
Hatay (Türkiye):
With that we reach at least 50,000 people in need in the regions of Hatay (Türkiye) and Idlib (Syria).
